Increasing urgent care capacity – Urgent care service

We are introducing an urgent care service to help increase capacity within the surgery to see patients. This currently operates Tuesday- Friday during normal surgery hours. The appointments will be available face to face with a GP and are booked the same way as regular appointments via our surgery reception team.

Currently the location the service operates from is Norwood Medical Centre – 99 abbey Road, Barrow-in-Furness LA14 1LF

Once you have been given an appointment attend the surgery as normal and check in at the front desk as you enter the building.

The GP will have access to your normal GP notes and consultations will be documented in your normal GP Record.

Routine Appointment

To request a routine appointment in the next 14 days:

  • use your NHS account (through the NHS website - link above or though the NHS App) to complete a medical request form
  • phone us on 01229 904040, Monday to Friday between 8:00am and 6:30pm and our receptionist will complete the form for you.
  • visit the surgery and speak with a receptionist, Monday to Friday from 8:00am to 6:30pm who can help you complete the form in person.

When you get in touch, we’ll ask you some brief infromation on what you need help with.

Enhanced access

Enhanced Access is the offer of pre-bookable appointments outside GP practices’ core contractual hours, either in the early morning 7am to 8am, evening 6:30pm to 8pm or at weekends on Saturday 9am to 5pm.  These appointments are available with a variety of roles including GPs, nurses, paramedics, healthcare assistants, pharmacists and social prescribers.  There are a range of appointments we can offer and are available to all our patients so please ask our reception team.

These appointments take place at a variety of locations so you may attend a different surgery but all blood test, ECG results, consultations etc will come back to the practice here at Norwood.

Current locations are:

  • Alfred Barrow Health Centre - Duke St, Barrow-in-Furness LA14 2LB
  • Norwood Medical Centre - 99 Abbey Road, Barrow-in-Furness LA14 5ES

Croslands Community Diagnostic Centre (CDC)

The CDC, which is run by University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust (UHMBT) and the Morecambe Bay Primary Care Collaborative, located up at Furness General Hospital will help patients who need diagnostic tests to be seen sooner and in a vastly improved environment.

With an MRI Scanning Suite, prep and recovery areas and three clinic rooms, the centre will provide the local community with quicker and easier access to a number of potentially life-saving tests and treatments for a range of conditions.

You might be booked an appointment here by one of our GPs or a member of the Reception or Admin teams. The map of the hospital below shows were its located. A limited number of paid parking spots are available alongside some disabled only parking. Patients can also used the main hospitals parking facilities

Home visits

Home Visits are provided only for patients who are unable to leave their home. If you feel you need a visit please try to call before 11am. Visits normally take place from 10am onwards.

A doctor or nurse may phone you back as it may be that your problem can be dealt with by telephone advice, or that it would be more appropriate to send a nurse, or indeed arrange a hospital attendance.

House visits are only available for patients who are housebound because of illness or disability.

Please remember that several patients can be seen in the practice in the time that it takes to make one home visit. There are also better facilities for examining and treating patients at the Health Centre.
